5 Stars Most underrated game of 2008
Addicting, fun gameplay with an interesting story - what is there not to like?

i have been playing this game for 3 days straight, and i gotta say, for 18 bucks this game is a steal. if you like hack’n slash games, or RPGs of any kind, buy this now. the controls can sometimes be a bit of a hassle, but in the end the few flaws can be easily overlooked as you enjoy pounding thousands of future-goblin things into dust.

5 Stars Sweet Game
This is one of the best games of the year for 2008 i have over 400hrs logged on it and its just awesome graphics and game play are great only bad thing i can say is WE HAVE NO DLC that was promised and its too short.

4 Stars too human
I don’t know much about this game. My son doesn’t talk about it at all. He usually lets me know if he likes the games.

4 Stars Great RPG
Very tactical, interesting game at sight and convinces in history, does not have many types of enemies, but it is another great game of RPG

4 Stars Too human
Its a fun and original game the only thing i found annoing was that the levels are big and long and there tends to be a lot of enemies in one place.

2 Stars not as good as last years
2 things i can complain about… ive been playing hockey games for years, and i like to play them at fast speeds. on last years, and all the years before you could adjust the game speed on a level from 0-100, 100 being the fastest, this one just has 3 speeds, slow, normal and fast… and fast plays like the adjustment on the old ones at like 50… i feel like im playing this game at slow motion, and it drives me crazy, i hate it… why did they have to change that? and also, the roster adjustment settings… if i want to update it, and sign free agents, and adjust my lines, i have to manually swap and change players from being listed as dressed, to scratched, and minors just to sign someone, so if i wanna put teemu selanne on the ducks, cause hes a free agent on this game, i have to send a scratched player to the minors, and send a dressed player to scratched just to sign one player, and keep doing that… before you could just trade and sign all the players you want, and then edit your roster when you are done… i understand you can just download the update rosters on live, but the latest update isnt that up to date, its updated up til august… its just very annoying for someone like me who likes to play the game with updated rosters, it takes forever to manually do it, unlike last years… very disappointed for something so simple they could have just kept the same and not changed.

3 Stars Not the greatest hockey title, but still pretty fun.
Well, I don’t think it’s a secret that EA unleashed a winner with NHL 09, but what about the 2K title? For the past few years, 2K’s game has rightfully achieved their own fan base through developing a game that was both fun to play and comprehensive. While this years game wasn’t as nifty as the games of 2K past, it’s still a good game in it’s own right that’s fun and easy to play. While die-hard hockey fans will probably steer toward NHL 09, NHL 2K9 might be a better choice for the casual hockey fan, not to mention younger hockey fans.

So what did I like about this game?

First off, the soundtrack RULES! Hands town, this is some of the best punk and metal ever complied PERIOD; let alone for a hockey soundtrack. The short version: Epitaph Records and Relapse Records dominated this soundtrack and provided some awesome tunes. The long version: Underground acts like Operation Ivy, Genghis Tron, and High On Fire make appearances while The Ramones, The Offspring, Joe Satriani, and Mastodon are some of the mainstream (or at least major label) acts making appearances in the game. 2K Sports hockey games have consistently had better soundtracks than it’s EA counterparts. This years 2K Sports game has the best soundtrack over any of the other hockey games 2K Sports that were put out; and considering that I’ve been a consistent fan of their soundtracks, that says a lot!

Also, the gameplay is decent because while it’s involved, it’s still easy to get the hang of. You don’t lose sacrifice much function if you decide to change the controls around to your liking. You only need to look at the instructions once (maybe a few times at worst) to get it figured out.

Finally, the AI for the gameplay was right on for a hockey game. You weren’t going to have a 4th liner perform Datsyukian Dekes, and it wasn’t like a first-line forward was going to get stonewalled by a backup or third-string goaltender. You could play the game without it frustrating the living you-know-what out of you.

So what didn’t I like? The franchise mode was a terrible disappointment this time around. That was the sole reason I liked the 2K titles over the EA titles for so many years (well, that and the soundtrack), but now many of the features I liked are gone (like having a fantasy draft) or are seriously hindered (you can’t trade prospects w/o calling them up, you can’t trade two players for one because the AI is not capable of managing the other team’s roster, and you can’t manage a minor-league team… and that’s to name a few.)

Also, there were still glitches that appear when you play the game. I didn’t mind as much when the titles cost $20, but it’s something that’s not acceptable considering the game had an initial cost of $40-50. I’m glad the price got dropped to $30, but even then, the Next Gen systems should have solved the irregularities that appeared in the PS2/XBox versions.

Be that as it may, if you’re looking for a hockey game that you can convince your friends, family, or significant other to play, NHL 2K9 is the better choice because it’s easy to figure out, it’s less expensive, and the overall atmosphere is geared more towards being fun than being serious. Hockey fans or gamers looking for a comprehensive game, however, are going to be slightly disappointed due to the bugs and overall lack of depth the game provides.

5 Stars Hockey Highlight
I bought this game for my 11 y.o. son. He is enjoying it a lot. He has other hockey games but this game is different and so he is finding it more interesting. The various location options, including a pond rink, are a bonus. Also, he is really enjoying the ability to be the goal tender in the game. He has actually played the position as a squirt and since then, has asked to play it full time. We opted not to go that way so, the game is filling in, sort of. Overall, the variety of options make this game lots of fun and even my other son who doesn’t normally like hockey games, is enjoying it too.

5 Stars Great follow up to NHL 2K8
First let me say that unlike the football series I am glad to see two companies trying for our sales dollars as this competition makes for better games.

Graphics: Superb. 2K8 looked great but improvements for 2K9 are visable. In particular the screen views are more intuitive -for example if you are playing by the boards you will get a closer view of the action. Most of the animations are very simliar to 2K8. In-game highlight reels are a nice addition as well.

Controls: Some complaints were made about the complexity of the controls in 2K8 and there have been some changes to make the game more accessible to newer players which uses less of top controls and more of the face controls. For those who got used to the controls in the prior year, they do make them still available in the options. On the fly coaching is still part of the game.

Gameplay: The game modes are the same as last year in terms of the non-live play including standard quick games, franchise and season modes. Live play has some additional features including: managing your team from a web-site, doing a live draft and trades. As with most sports games live roster updates are available. The play is very similiar to prior year although it feels more smoother.

All in all a great game that should be fun for newcomers and veterans and in my opinion is a better series than the EA sports hockey games.

2 Stars stay away from this years nhl2k go with nhl 09
Surprising as it is after now well this game was last year that this years game just blows. The animation is horrible, the game play laughable and other then the commentary for this ( i am a sanjose fan and they used their commentators) is just a waste of money. The goalies play like they have no soul for the most part. They really need to pump up next years title if they want any chance to be any where in the same league as EAs 09 from this year. This is the first time ever I have bought both hockey titles in the same year. Stay away from nhl2k9 and go with nhl 09 the game rocks

1 Star Constantly Crashes Our Wii
We bought this game with several others at Christmastime along with a brand new Wii console (so everything is new, nothing is old, everything should work, right?). Our son loves this game, but it randomly freezes our Wii system. There is a buzzing noise that travels through the TV speakers, and sometimes the game screen freezes or it just goes black. The only way to un-freeze the Wii is to unplug it (even the power button on the Wi won’t work).

Apparently, from looking at other reviews, this is a problem with this game. Since it was the most expensive one we bought, it’s extra-frustrating that it’s the only one that we have had a problem with.

If the game did not freeze (and it does, with absolutely no rhyme or reason-we can play it for days with no problems, and then, suddenly, it’s crashing 3-4 times in a day), we would give this a 5+ stars rating.

4 Stars Fun but locks up
Pros: Gameplay is challenging. AI is pretty good.

Cons: No Internet multiplayer. Franchise mode locks up mid season.

5 Stars NHL 2K9
Excellent game. Many options to choose from and lots of fun! A must for sports fans!

1 Star Wii NHL 2K9 disappointing
This is what my 10 yo son had to say about this game after we renting it. — This game is bad. DON’T WASTE YOUR MONEY!!! The players are hard to control and run out of energy in a few seconds. I hate the super checks. It is a very hard game for non-serious gamers to learn. Maybe if they added All-play it would be fun. I have Madden ‘09 and it is a lot more fun for less money. I also have other NHL games for the PS2 and love them. Only buy this game if you only have a Wii and are a serious NHL fan.

4 Stars NHL 2K9 Wii
Great game for the game play but terrible to view any words on the screen. Very hard to read and so it makes it difficult to navigate screens sometimes. The games sometimes pauses and acts like it is going to lock up. Great game but could stand for some improvements.

2 Stars A major step back for the franchise
It’s very rare that third-party reviews hit the nail on the head, but unfortunately with NHL 2K9, that is indeed the case. Sadly, this year’s iteration takes major steps back in several nuances that previously made the 2K series the best hockey games on the market. From the inability to choose more than three game speeds, extremely unrealistic ice effects, horrid in-game announcing in which goalie names are often reversed, and an infuriating decision to make the net an immovable object that does not react to the puck, NHL 2K9 sets hockey video games back half a decade at least. Sadly, this is just the tip of the iceberg. While the gameplay remains nonetheless intact, one can’t help but wonder why 2K Sports decidedly cheapened the already near-perfect product that was NHL 2K8. So, if you’re looking for some hard-hitting, realistic, well-rounded hockey action, you’d probably do well to look elsewhere.

1 Star Worst hockey game ever! Don’t buy
I decided to buy this game after reading up on NHL 09 and seeing it was very hard to score in that game. So I bought this and I was extremely disappointed to say the least. The graphics are absolutely horrible especially for a PS3 game. I also on MLB 2K7 and the graphics are just as bad for that game compared to MLB The Show. This game is horrible and looks like it was designed by a bunch of chimps. My recommendation is to go with NHL 09. It may cost about $10 more but it has to be better than this game.

4 Stars Good hockey game
I’m used to playing EA Sports games and decided to try 2k9 when it came to hockey. The graphics are really nice. The controls are easy to learn. The only annoying thing is that I wish I could fast forward some parts of the presentation, especially when players approach each other for face-off.

5 Stars Great game!
If you like hockey, this is the game for you. It is fun, intuitive, and has great graphics. The new controls are very easy for a newbie to learn as well.

5 Stars Awesome
Great Graphics and action for us baseball fans. I play so well that no one in my family wants to play me anymore!!!!!!!!!!!!!

4 Stars great game
i’ve had this game 4 a week and its pretty fun. but sometimes it get so frusterating like when i ytry 2 hit a homer and the guy bunts. this is however the most realistic looking sports game ever to be made on 360 but isn’t the best in the the 2k series (i loved 2K5). its still alot of fun when u get everything down. i recommend it. P.S.(dont get 2K8 it SUCKS and its unfinished)

4 Stars Great Game with a terrible oversight
There’s nothing I can argue about how fun the game is or how well it’s made that hasn’t already been said. Read any of these other reviewers and you’ll get a good idea of the gameplay, but in short, yes the swing stick is a terrible way to bat and the fielding is kind of odd, but overall its acceptable if you just tweak the settings a little bit. The worst part of this game is that after I finished an 82 game season, which ended with me winning the world series, I didn’t get any of the money that it said I would get to rebuild and change my team. Instead, it just basically erased anything that ever happened and I started from the beginning again. The only way anyone could even know that I’ve played the game at all would be to look in the “skybox” to find my trophies and unlocked stuff. This is a terrible problem, and it’s frustrating to play that many games and get nothing for it, but playing the game really is great. I always had fun, and sure it takes a while to play one game (40 minutes or so), but it really is fun and the price is down to about 15 bucks used, so if you like baseball, go buy this.

5 Stars My favorite sports game ever.
I want all you you sport game lovers to play this amazing game. It has great graphics and is easy to play.

4 Stars My review of MLB 2k7
I bought this game when it was first released.

I was inpressed by this games.

My thouthts were if 2K7 is good, then MLB 2k8 should be better.

In my opinion 2k7 is better than 2k8.

They took out some of the features of 2k7 when they made 2k8.

1. You cant put in a face.

2. The fans in the stands don’t move at all.

3. You can’t look at home plate from the outfield point of view when you are on a base running.

One featue that 2k8 has that 2k8 that’s not in 2k7 is, you are told when the pitcher is warmed up and ready to pitch.
