Since its inception, the Metal Gear franchise has been one of the most successful game series on any console receiving worldwide recognition and praise. The franchise that pioneered the stealth action genre is back with Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection for the PlayStation 2 computer entertainment system. Metal Gear Solid: The Essential Collection includes Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2 and Metal Gear Solid 3 for the very first time in one collectible package.

5 Stars Itsa SNAKE!!!
This has to be one of the funnest Shooter Game/Strategy that I have ever played. ALL the games are fun, even the first Metal Gear (which looks like PS1 graphics). This is recommended for anyone who never played Metal Gear and would like to own it. Get this collection now, don’t buy them individually, it’s a better value for the buck. Especially the 3rd game, which cost as much as this entire package.
If your someone that is timid about shooters I’d recommend this as well. This game is so fun that you’ll forget about the shooting(depending on which version) and instead wonder how to sneak around that enemy near that left wall, or perhaps lure that other enemy into a trap? This game is focused on stealth, and although you can fight enemies (which at points you have to) it’s better to avoid detection.
The characters are also “realistic”, even in the PS1 version. From Snake’s “quirky” comments and attitude, you’ll enjoy the variety of personalities within each character and how they react to each-other as well. If Snake dies in the game, the characters will scream his name in desperation. Which can be a little sad.
My only con is the memory card. The game did not “read” the memory card on the PS2 (This is the original PS2 memory card) and therefore I could not save. I turned the system off, back on, same result. I then cleaned the slot and card. Same. So then I had to reset the machine and pull the memory card out, then put it back in without the CD. Funny thing is that the system read the card itself. So I’m not sure if it was the game’s fault itself, but I was finally able to save after deleting some free space and having to go up against another “no memory” lapse even after deleting some space before I was finally able to save.
5 Stars A must have collection
If you have never heard of metal gear solid this is a great way to get into the series! Not only is this a great deal but these games are almost impossible to find at your local best buy or wal mart. at this low price you can enjoy some of the best games ever made by konami. The creator hideo kojima won a life time acheivement award for metal gear solid 4 last year. Also a few other game packs to keep in mind around the same price is Devil May cry and grand theft auto! This is a must have for all metal gear solid fans!
5 Stars Very enjoyable
I’d never played the Metal Gear Solid series before trying MGS4. After getting used to the controls I began to really enjoy it. I wanted to go back and play the series, as the plot is pretty involved, and found this collection. This is a great series so far. It is hard going back to PS1 graphics, especially now on a bigscreen tv, but it is still a very good game.
Pro: A classic series of games, and for good reason. Very good gameplay, and a little different than most military-like games. Not a First Person Shooter in the normal sense. The best way through most areas is to avoid any conflicts. Good value for the price.
Con: Dated graphics, especially on MGS1. Some of the dialog in MGS1 is a little rough.
I’m very happy to have the set, and will be tempted to find some of the other offshoots of this series when I finish MGS4. A shame the series has come to the end. I hope Hideo Kojima will make something similar, or some one else will take up the mantle of the tactical espionage game.
3 Stars Why no second disc to subsistence?
The games are great, no doubt, but if you’re going to put out a product called the “essential collection” and included in one of the original games (or rerelease I should say) was the first two games of the entire series, you know, the ones that started it all, and you don’t include them… Ooooh, boy.
But this collection is great fun, filled with three (should be five) of the best games ever made, and an incredible bargain.
5 Stars a masterpiece of a set
This game set is well worth its pay: I actually couldn’t play the first game because first of all I didn’t have the memory card for it and second (call me picky) the graphics suuuck, I understand that’s what was available at the time, but we live in a different age now with realistic graphics. I just couldn’t deal with it. I get the gist of what happens in it (MGS4 helps alot) but that’s besides the point.
The second game was very exciting and intense: like sneaking around guys and escaping if caught. And the guys you disable don’t disappear! You actually have to like stuff them in lockers or unoccupied rooms. Very realistic for a ps2 game. The graphics are smooth but not the best I’ve seen.
The third game is the stand out of the collection: you can do everything along the same lines of the second game and more! You actually have to survive the rugged jungle while sneaking around guys and disabling them against all odds. By meaning of surviving I mean you have to take care of yourself throughout the game: You have to consistantly eat over time or after a battle because you’ll wear down, affecting your aiming and your gut will growl giving your position away when your to trying to sneak! You also have to watch what you eat because the food you kill or gather over time can go bad and give you food poisoning! You also have to medicate yourself if you are poisoned. You also have to pull bullets and arrows out where you were hit and mend them. You even have to mend broken bones! Simply left me awe struck.
But where the heart of all these games lie is in the storyline. These aren’t just your typical everyday games. Every one of these games have an in depth story that immediately pull you in and unfold over time like a giant book across all 4 games. And they stay with you for a while even after playing them. Every one of the boss battles are memorable that are within the storyline. In short, nothing but epic.
