5 Stars Great fun, no blood, guts or violence
Huge world to drive around, it’s fun and challanging, but not impossible to win awards and get upgrades like cars. Graphics are excellent! Music and sound are great. Best part, although I like semi-violent games also, it’s nice to find one that isn’t!!!! Fun for all ages. Just be aware, it needs lots of PC power. It runs fine on my 3.3mhz chipset, 128 meg video card and 4 gigs ram, but I did try it on a 2.8mhz with 2 gigs and it didn’t like it at all. As for the drm - as much as I hate it also, it hasn’t impacted my system and being able to load it only 5 times should last me until I get bored with it.

5 Stars Awsome game
Fantastic game and very well optimized. A great PC port is rare these days. The only thing i would like to know is why the developers did not add text chat to the multi player portion of the game.

4 Stars Fun, awesome graphics, lengthy, needs police chases
Yeah I like this game, it’s another great Burnout that finally came to PC from a console only past. It features insanely fast cars and a good amount of various race types to go along with them. First and foremost the graphics are really pretty to look at as far as the cars are concerned with the environment being average this generation level. I had no problem with the default controls on my Logitech Rumblepad 2 and the game was smooth as silk on my system at 1680×1050 all high except the SSO or OCC or some such setting I can’t remember. My system is: WinXP, Q6600@2.4Ghz, 4GB RAM, 8800GT512.

The damage is pretty cool to look at as well with flying tires, crumpling sheetmetal, shattering glass and the like in a slow motion edited for maximum spectacle style with real speed action as well upon the fairly regular catastrophic crash. After a crash your car is automatically fixed and you’re on your way again. The sound is nice as well, I’m not a fan of the blaring music in most games of this type so I turn it off, the car sounds range from average to great in the higher level cars.

This game features a few different types of racing well known to most who have played the past burnout games, which in general in my opinion have always been the best arcade style racing games. The way to trigger a race is to look at the minimap and see what race type it is then stop at the intersection where the race starts and push both the accelerator and brake at the same time to enter the race intro info and then start the race.

The first type is the fairly standard race versus other cars to a finish line across the decent size Paradise City, you need to win and to do that you need to dodge traffic, make the appropriate turns as indicated on your HUD with flashing street signs right or left or via your cars turning signals. Also you will need to avoid being taken down by your competitors and them down if possible. By a take down I mean essentially making the other racer crash through “rubbin” or pushing the other car into other cars or objects which triggers a view of the take down and then return to your own car to continue the race.

Another type is marked man where you try to do nothing but avoid being taken down, with a maximum of 3, and get to the finish line. You can wreck a lot of times in most races until it tells you to go to one of the drive through car fixing places scattered around the city. You also can do the Stunt race type where you try to do as much drifting, jumps, near misses, oncoming lane, boost use known as burning as well as use the burning/NOS continuously until it is used up, AKA a burnout. Another type is road rage where you try to get a set number of takedowns of other racers in a specific time period throughout the city. These are the ones I can remember I may have missed some.

Once you win a race, which you must do to upgrade your license and get access to more cars, you are also invited to take down a specific car while free roaming to get it taken to the junk yard which is your base to change cars in your inventory.

Other things to do are use of various jumps to smash through the burnout billboards around the city, break through all of the 400 gates that lead to shortcuts or secret racing areas like a mine, stadium, dirt oval, waterfront, construction site and others. Your boost is replenished by near misses, oncoming, jumps and also by using the drive through gas stations. There are also drive thru paint shops. I liked just cruising around and discovering all this stuff with the occasional race, there are 75 total cars and 4 bikes to obtain. The bikes are faster and harder to avoid crashing. You can use the train tracks to get around with no moving obstacles to contend with.

The things I don’t like are the annoyingly long time it takes the game to startup, you are always prompted to create an EA online account etc and not to mention the various legal and publisher screens while having to listen to the otherwise good GNR paradise city song to the same point every time before game start.

The car loading junkyard screens are cool but take overly long and are clumsy to get to car view, paint selection and finally actually starting to play. Another thing is that the city is pretty small when compared to how fast you go around it, NFS has a much bigger area to race in by comparison. While racing the way it tells you where to turn, which is a must if you want to win the race, requires you to pay attention to the peripheral flashing street signs and sometimes seem to be triggered too early or late, I’d like to see a 3d minimap that gives you left/right arrows or HUD arrows in the middle of the screen so I don’t have to take my eyes off the insanely fast action.

Race starts require a full stop and button combo, just give me a single button to press while moving to start please. Another thing is that I wish I could select the amount of damage a car would take before it crashes, otherwise certain cars are just not used or even practical, it’s understood that this is built in difficulty though. Another one is the burnout radio guy who comes in with the same “great advice”, this is good at first as far as picking up how the game works but after that it’s just annoying, you can turn this down in the settings though.

I wish there would be race tracks to do more official races on in here as well with no traffic and a more predictable racing circuit but I suppose this is not that type of game. Another thing would be adding police chases and escapes to the race types a la NFS. I suppose what I’m saying here is that I wish other types of racing games would incorporate the mind blowing speed and damage physics as well as boost that burnout is known for, most more sim games just don’t do as good a job conveying the high speeds, although Grid was good at it but with too few circuits.

All in all it’s a really fun game to be recommended over NFS, but PC gamers didn’t have a choice until now. Too bad they missed the holiday season on this one or it would have been a bigger draw.

PS- you CAN get a securom remover program, just google it. It’s just that you won’t be able to play any installed securom enabled games afterwards. You can also get punkbuster removers as well.

1 Star Limited Activations DRM
This game comes with Securom, requires online activation, and limits the number of times you can install it.

It’s basically a rental because the game will stop to function in the future because of its DRM.

If you value your money, then skip this game.

5 Stars Go PC!
Securom or not, they did a good job on this game. It is highly optimized, runs great on my dual core amd w/midrange ati HD 2600 PRO 1440×900 res. I am buying this and dont care about all the DRM controversy. I would like to see more quality titles coming to PC and that is why I am supporting this with a purchase! GO PC! Cant wait for SF IV…in june!

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars NSP Carbon
Awesome game, great free roam and street racing system. The best in the NFS franchise so far.

5 Stars My Review
I liked the product.

Thank You

4 Stars The best 360 racing title for customization purposes…
Arguements can certainly be made as to whether or not Carbon (2006) is less “thrilling” than Most Wanted (2005). You could also argue that the shorter story line and all night time driving leaves Carbon at a disadvantage when compared with Most Wanted. BUT, one thing that simply cannot be argued is that Carbon is superior to Most Wanted in customizations. In fact, I’d go so far as to say it’s the best racing title yet, even here two years and some odd months later. The possiblities of making yourself a unique ride are endless thanks to autosculpt, a system which allows you to modify parts to your exact specs.

To give you an example, one of the first cars you’ll unlock is a mustang gt (bottom tier). Once you have enough cash and unlocks, you can literally take this thing into the garage and customize it for top tier races, and win! The custom paint graph allows you to get just the right shade of pinks, yellows, purples, whatever; And the chrome wheel selection is expansive both in style and sizes (17-21 inches).

When I started playing racing games, I was strictly an Arcade guy. Give me a Burnout or Midnight Club any day and I was happy. But Carbon completely changed my racing habits, and now customization is the first and foremost thing I check for when picking a title.

Unfortunatly, nothing EA, or anyone else for that matter, has done since is quite as good, although Undercover comes pretty close.

EDIT: I’ve yet to play Midnight Club LA, but if it’s more expansive in the customizations than Carbon, I’d be surprised.

4 Stars Very Fun
This is my opinion is the best need for speed game out. Carbon is very fun and very addictive. The only thing that I didn’t like about it was that all the acheivements are very hard to get but the game in general is very fun.

4 Stars Fun but dark
Actually, it is fun drving in the darkness but the graphic I think is not as good as the previous one.

Super Mario Kart

May 11th, 2009

Super Mario Kart

The first Go-Kart Racing game to come out for the SNES. Featuring all of the Super Mario bunch like Mario, Luigi, King Koopa, Toadstool, and the almost forgotten Donkey Kong Jr. Collect many power ups like mushrooms to speed you up; throw Koopa shells or banana peels at your opponent’s to slow them down, plus many more items. The Battle mode is an excellent two player game, use the split screen view to watch both players battle it out. Super Mario Kart is fun and exciting addition to family of Mario games.

User Ratings and Reviews

5 Stars Without a doubt…
One of the best overall video games of all time! I grew up in the era or NES, SNES, Genisis, etc. I played a lot game back then and this is one I still play. Friends of the family will come over and we will hold tournements on this game playing the ever-great battle mode. I swear this game never gets old. Well worth getting.

5 Stars Classic
This is still the best version of Mario Kart out there. It has some of the best maps, music, and it doesn’t try anything fancy like some of the newer Mario Karts. You really can’t go wrong with this game. Everyone should be able to appreciate this game, whether you enjoy racing games or not.

5 Stars Great Nostalgic SNES fun
Great quality game, which is hard to come by since these have been around since the early 90’s. I would recommend GeeksEtc to anyone if you’re looking for any older system games.

3 Stars Get set. GO
This game is fun to play. I prefer the version that N64 has out though.

4 Stars Not like I remembered but still fun
I guess I’ve just been spoiled with all the good graphics out there today. This game looks like pixelated garbage. It’s still fun, but gives me a headache after ten minutes. Also, no reverse? WTF??? I hate bouncing off of walls to turn around!

Ridge Racer 7

May 10th, 2009

Ridge Racer 7

Continuing its illustrious history, Ridge Racer 7 returns as a title on the PlayStation 3 platform. Drift around corners at speeds over 160 mph taking the lead as Ridge Racer 7 brings gamers a driving experience unlike any other. With a new platform comes new territory as Ridge Racer 7 promises to reinvent itself, allowing players to choose from 40 different machines and over 20 courses. With reversed courses, the total grows to over 40, most in the series ever! Players can further enjoy the drift racing experience by taking part in the new customization mode, opening up the experience with up to 375,000 visual customization and 7,150 tunable combinations. With full support of Sony’s new network service, Ridge Racer fans have an entirely new world to explore and drift through!

The classic drift racer debuts on the PlayStation 3.

Decals can add a fun look to your car. View larger.

Nitrous tuning can pay off big time. View larger.

Motion blur increases the feeling of speed. View larger.

More tracks than ever before. View larger.

Create the ultimate ride
The classic drift racing game returns to the PlayStation brand in style and with loads of new customization features. In exterior creation mode, players can select, view, and apply body kits for almost any area of their car. Kits include lowers, lifts, airflow and even major body modification. Once the kits are applied, players can head to the paint and body shop to have their specific paint tone applied as the backdrop for their killer custom decals. If you’re ride still isn’t hot enough, consider adding some wheels from the wheel shop for that extra bit of style.

If exteriors aren’t your thing, then consider fine tuning the handing. Customizable Handling mode allows you to tweak cornering performance by adjusting tire pressure and suspension to your chosen settings. Feel the turns with sport suspension or soften the landings with something more touring oriented. Either way, you can pick just the right feel for your favorite track, rival racer, or experience level.

Nitrous boosts have always been a central part to any racers’ strategy, but before Ridge Racer 7 there wasn’t any control over the type or amount of gas. Now, you have total control over such minutiae as the number of tanks, charge rate, even total boost limit. If you prefer to have more control over nitrous while racing, consider the new “flex nitrous,” which can be turned off or on at the driver’s discretion.

Improved cars, improved performance
A wide range of sports cars are available in Ridge Racer, with over 40 to choose from. Including the customization options listed above, each car has over 200,000 variations in terms of control and appearance. Debuting in this title are two impressive sportsters: the Centellee and the Magnifico. The Centellee from Terrazi Motors blasts off the line with a 4000cc V8 engine and has an unbelievable top speed of just over 210 mph. Not to skimp on looks, the body of the Centellee is hand-crafted and recreated perfectly on-screen.

Another other welcome addition to the Ridge Racer family is the Magnifico, known the world round for its unmatched luxurious interior. One of the new generation of light bodied sports cars, the Magnifico can ramp up to 178 mph via a 2000cc 4-cyvlinder inline engine.

On the track, the cars still accelerate and drift in that quintessential Ridge Racer arcade style. Large, sliding turns and short bursts of air are the name of the game as you speed past your opponents in a blur of color. The track count for this installment has been pushed to an astonishing 44- more tracks than any any previous Ridge Racer title. The variety of locales is truly astounding, as you’ll be racing by rushing waterfalls one minute and near the top of a snow-capped peak the next. The track layouts have something for every racing fan and style. Ridge Racer 7 grabs the PlayStation 3’s processing power and doesn’t let go. Running in 1080p high definition video at 60 frames per second, the courses look lusher, the tracks feel faster, and the cars look gorgeous.

User Ratings and Reviews

3 Stars Ridge Racer 7
This game offers a all-new racing experience if you like movies like fast and the furious or games like Need for Speed or just plan racing then this game is for you.

5 Stars Way fun!
I just started playing this game two weeks ago. I love it. The cars you can play are awesome looking cars that don’t exist in real life. I was not a racing fan until I played this game. It got me hooked. You can play people all over the world in the Online Battle to really test your true skills. You get the sense that you are a real world class racer! Try it out, you will see what I mean. However, don’t get frustrated when you fail to unlock new cars. You just need to retry a couple of times. Stick with it, and you will get better beyond your imagination.

1 Star Disappointed
This is probably the worst racing game I’ve ever played. I can’t get the car to go around corners without spinning all the way around two or three times. I read the manual to try to figure out what I’m doing wrong (that in itself is a bad sign, you shouldn’t have to read the manual just to figure out how to play a game) and the instructions on how to drift are really basic.

The instructions are:

1. Turn into the corner

2. Let off the gas

3. Turn through the corner.

Sounds simple right?

If only it worked that way.

What ends up happening is you slide through the corner and then continue to slide all the way around and continue to slide.

I’m not impressed. After trying to figure the game out for about 30 minutes I think it is time to go trade it in. Glad I only paid $[...] for it.

2 Stars Absolute Trash!
I purchased Ridge Racer 7 recently and I realized very soon that it was a very bad game. First of all, it is the hardest racing game I have ever played, and I have years of experience with racing games. I spent almost 30 minutes beating the first race! The in game experience is very poor, and I felt that the gameplay was always either exaggerated or boring. Save your time and money, and buy a good racing game such as Project Gotham Racing, not this.

5 Stars awesome racing game !
ok here’s the deal. this is obviously not a “sim” type of video game like some might say Gran Turismo is, but this game is a lot of fun, has good decent graphics and HAS SOMETHING VERY IMPORTANT A LOT OF OTHER RACING GAMES LACK, MAYBE I SHOULD SAY ALL OTHER RACING GAMES….

MULPITPLAYER MODE PEOPLE! AND I MEAN SPLIT SCREEN LOCAL MULTIPLAYER!

4 Stars ATTENTION ATV FANS!!!!!!!!!
If you love racing fourwheelers or dirt bikes you’ll LOVVVVE this game!! I got this in the mail and I couldn’t stop playing it. It is an absolute blast!!! The tracks make you feel like you are actually on the machine racing. Sound is excellent and the picture quality is good too. I highly recommend this game to anyone who loves atvs!!

2 Stars fun, but the graphics are poor
This is my 8 year old son’s favorite game. We enjoy racing against each other. Good variation in tracks and courses to play on. The soundtrack isn’t bad. However, the graphics are very poor, especially considering this is on a PlayStation 3. The bystanders and background enviroments are extremely grainy and pixelated. Being a new game on the PS3, I had much higher expectations.

4 Stars Great racing game but no the best
With Untamed, the formula for the MX vs. ATV series hasn’t changed much, and the game is at its best when focused on freewheeling, pedal-to-the-metal speed. There are moments of abject frustration–think of the most tedious of the supercross events and practically any freestyle contest–but that frustration is mitigated somewhat by the fact that there’s always something else to do in the game. Sure, it’s more of the same with MX vs. ATV Untamed, but at least it’s a lot more.

5 Stars Mx Vs ATV Untamed, EXCELLENT
This game is not out in New Zealand yet, thought I would get the jump on the rest of the PS3 owners here, excellent game, I do race myself and the techniques, body position etc are all relative to racing a dirt bike, this is an excellent game and I can’t wait to see what comes out in the future, in my opinion the game designers have a winner, 10/10.

Ian # 611

4 Stars Only MX game out there
Other than Pure, this is the only true MX game out there. I just purchased the PS3. I had this game for the PS2 and this version is better(more content and improved graphics). Being new to the PS3, almost any game on the PS3 looks good to me. I would probably rate this game a 3 star, but like I said, it is the only MX game for PS3. The controls are a bit loose for me as I like tight controls on racing games. But I’m having fun which is the most important thing and there is a lot of content in this game. If you enjoy creating your own bike/rider with different graphics, you should like that aspect of the game.
